Reviving the Mill

The award winning restoration of the old Nant Mill as part of the Nant Distillery complex began in 2005 and was completed in April 2008. Thanks to a dedicated team of professionals the old mill, which had lain idle since 1897, was restored for commercial operation. "Flour milling was of necessity the first major industry in all of the Australian colonies and for a long time the only industry. It remained one of the most important industries throughout the nineteenth centry in most colonies. The Tasmanian water mills (and in particular the Nant Mill) play a tangible link to the pivotable role of water power in the formative stage of Tasmania's industrial economy. The wheel has come full circle, with Tasmania's reliance on hydro-electric power in the twentieth century ( extract from article by Warwick Pearson).

The water-driven flour mill, built in 1823 and expanded in 1857, is Edward Nicholas' great legacy to the district and is once again a working facility, right down to the continued use of the magnificent French Burr millstones. Now home to the Nant Distillery, the old mill is used to grist the malted barley in the time-honoured craft of distilling whisky.
